Abstract:

Video games of the past, written to physical ROMs in cartridges, and even early arcade ported games operated with the definition of the bare minimum of hardware. But how did they manage to do it? Modern games use thousands of times more resources than, for example, the original Super Mario Bros for the NES, albeit with significantly better graphics; is there something we can learn from the past to use in the future of the gaming industry?
